The famous quote that often gets attributed to Gandhi, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win", also works the other way. A dominant idea or organization will first have its position weakened enough that it needs to fight for it. Then it eventually becomes a laughingstock and finally fades away, forgotten.
