I don't agree with all ideas or theories that I defend. I'll often defend an interesting theory that I'm more or less ambivalent over, simply to see if anyone can marshal any really strong objections against it. Then I might dismiss the theory entirely.

It's annoying when people think that I agree with a theory just because I happen to be defending it.

I'd be inclined to think there was something disingenous about this post, as if one defends a theory without first making it clear that one is just intellectually exploring, it seems to me a reasonable assumption that one agrees with it. That said, I thought your post on [livejournal.com profile] polyamory did make that clear, so I'm not sure why people are being quite so defensve... *shrug*

It's because everyone's aware of their own thought processes not being black and white but tend to forget it might apply to people they are arguing with, too.

Or something.

Well, isn't that the most likeliest option? Because normally people defend their own ideas and thoughts and decisions. Defending an idea(A) and agreeing with one(B) are two thing which don't need to occur simultaneously, but it's a rule of thumb that usually those two occur with each other, not separately. So if A, then B.

If that's annoying you, remeber to say aloud that you don't agree with the idea but you are defending it for othet reasons, because we people aren't fortune tellers. :P At least I could undrestand your point of view, but not initially if no one's telling me what's going on.
